Your first pilot licence. Fly light aircraft and begin your aviation journey.

Training Overview
The Recreational Pilot Licence (RPL) is the ideal starting point for anyone who dreams of flying. It allows you to operate a light aircraft as pilot in command under day Visual Flight Rules (VFR), opening the door to recreational flying and further aviation training. Whether your goal is to fly for enjoyment or to begin a pathway toward a professional pilot career, the RPL develops strong foundations in aircraft handling, safety awareness, and aeronautical decision-making.
Under CASA regulations, an RPL holder may fly a single-engine aircraft carrying up to one passenger within 25 nautical miles of the departure aerodrome, unless additional endorsements are obtained.
Who This Course Is For
- First-time Student Pilot
- Aviation Enthusiasts and Hobby Flyers
- Students Exploring a Future Aviation Career
- Graduates of Trial Introductory Flight or First Solo program

What You Will Learn
Aircraft control and handling fundamentals
Students develop the core flying skills required to safely control a light aircraft. Training focuses on maintaining stable flight attitudes, controlling airspeed and altitude, coordinated turns, climbs and descents, and understanding how control inputs affect aircraft performance. These skills form the foundation for all future flight training.
Take-off, landing, and circuit operations
Students learn the correct techniques for safe departures and landings at controlled and non-controlled aerodromes. Training includes runway alignment, aircraft configuration, power management, and maintaining safe approach profiles. Repeated circuit practice builds confidence and consistency during the most critical phases of flight.
Radio Communication and Aerodrome Procedures
Clear communication is essential for safe flight operations. Students learn standard aviation radio phraseology, how to make position reports, and how to communicate effectively with other aircraft and air traffic services. Training also covers aerodrome procedures, traffic patterns, and maintaining situational awareness in both controlled and non-controlled airspace.
Basic Navigation and Airspace Awareness
Students are introduced to fundamental navigation skills used by recreational pilots. This includes reading aeronautical charts, identifying visual landmarks, maintaining heading and track, and understanding Australian airspace classifications. Pilots also learn how to maintain awareness of nearby aircraft and operate safely within different airspace environments.
Flight Safety and Emergency Procedures
Safety is a core component of all flight training. Students are taught how to recognise abnormal situations and respond appropriately during flight. Training includes emergency procedures such as engine failure management, forced landing planning, system malfunctions, and maintaining control of the aircraft under unexpected conditions.

Training Process
1. Enrolment & Orientation
After enrolment, you will complete an orientation covering training structure, safety procedures, local airspace, aircraft, and Wingman operating policies. This ensures you start flight training with clarity and confidence.
2. RPL Ground School
Ground school covers essential aviation knowledge including basic aerodynamics, air law, meteorology, navigation, and human factors. This prepares you for both the RPL theory exam and practical flying.
3. Flight Training
You’ll progress through structured flight lessons focusing on aircraft handling, circuit operations, emergency procedures, and safe decision-making under instructor guidance.
4. First Solo Flight
Once consistent skill and safety standards are demonstrated, you will complete your first supervised solo flight – your first flight as Pilot in Command.
5. RPL Flight Test
When training requirements are met, you will complete a flight test with a CASA-approved Testing Officer. Successful completion results in the issue of your Recreational Pilot Licence.
What This Licence Allows
With an RPL issued through Wingman Academies, you may:
- Act as Pilot in Command of light aircraft
- Carry passengers (within CASA limits)
- Fly within 25 nautical miles of your departure aerodrome
- Progress toward a Private Pilot Licence (PPL)
Your First Licence
Your First Freedom
The Recreational Pilot Licence (RPL) is your entry into aviation. It teaches the fundamentals of flight, safety, and decision-making, allowing you to operate light aircraft confidently within local airspace as Pilot in Command.
The Wingman RPL course follows the CASA syllabus and combines structured flight training with practical theory. You will develop strong aircraft handling skills, situational awareness, and disciplined procedures – forming the foundation for all future pilot training.
